Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis literally means "porous bone." This condition develops when bone is no longer replaced as quickly as it is removed.

Healthy bone consists of living tissue that is always being “remodeled,” with small amounts being absorbed in your body and small amounts being replaced.

If more bone calcium is absorbed than is replaced, bone density is reduced, and the bone becomes progressively weaker, increasing the risk of breakage. This typically happens through the natural process of aging—more so in women—or from physical inactivity, heredity, smoking, and excessive alcohol intake.

At Cape Fear Orthopedics, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and osteoporosis-related conditions. If you are concerned about osteoporosis and its effect on your daily life, we can set up a personalized treatment plan that may prevent future fractures and immobility.
